During WWII, the RSO was developed as a German tractor to deal with conditions such as deep snowfall. A 70 hp 3,517 cc V8 gasoline engine and 4-speed transmission were mounted in the front, and powered the rear differential and sprockets via a propeller shaft. The first production model RSO\/01 had a rounded cabin of pressed steel sheet. 60cm width snow tracks could be fitted to get over bad roads. The production started in October, 1942 and from next spring, the RSO\/01 had the cabin floor raised by around 30mm to keep it out of the way of the snow tracks.
