Description
The German Afrika Korps (Deutsches Afrikakorps, D.A.K) was formed in the winter of 1941 from Wehrmacht combat units to take part in the North African Campaign. From February 1942, along with the Italian XXI Corps, it became part of Panzer Group “Africa” under the command of Erwin Rommel. The D.A.K was equipped with various types of combat vehicles and maintained a large fleet of motor vehicles. One of the trucks used by the Afrika Korps was the Mercedes-Benz L3000—a 3-ton cargo truck with a 4x2 wheel configuration.
For infantry transport, the s.E.Pkw Kfz.70 was employed, a version of the Horch 108 Typ 40 army vehicle. In the cargo bed of this vehicle, a Zwillingssockel 36 twin mount could be installed, carrying two 7.92 mm MG 34 machine guns for use against air targets or to provide fire support for infantry. Also in use was the light universal all-terrain vehicle le.gl.Einheits-Pkw, produced by Stoewer, BMW, and Hanomag from 1936. These multipurpose vehicles came in various configurations, one of which was the Kfz.2—a three seat radio communication vehicle equipped with a Torn.Fu.b1 radio set.
