Description
Among the passenger car modifications produced by Henry Ford, the Runabout version, later known as the Roadster, held a special place. It was a lightweight two-seat car with an open body and a folding soft top, designed to provide maximum mobility at a minimum cost. In 1918, its price was just over $400, making the 1918 Model T Runabout affordable even for an ordinary worker.


The Runabout body had a distinctive silhouette with an elegant folding soft top and a large enclosed storage compartment behind the seats. Another notable feature of the Model T Runabout was that it had only one body door, on the right-hand side. Three pedals controlled its unique planetary transmission, providing forward drive, reverse, and braking.


The car could reach a speed of 65–70 km/h while offering remarkable off-road capability. Thanks to its high ground clearance and flexible suspension, it could negotiate deep ruts, mud, and stones on the roads of early 20th-century America, where ordinary cars would quickly become stuck.


Reliable and affordable, the 1918 Model T Runabout became an icon of automotive heritage and a vivid illustration of its era.
